Lewis Pepper is the skeletal ghost resident of The Mansion and a former member of the Mystery Skulls.

Appearance[]

In Life (past)[]

Lewis has a muscular body, broad shoulders, and is very tall. Lewis had purple hair styled into a proud pompadour with long bangs. He had a square face, tan skin, and a hook nose. Lewis wore a purple waistcoat, a white dress shirt with a magenta ascot, dark purple jeans, and purple sneakers.

Afterlife (current)[]

Lewis has magenta, flaming hair, a jaw-less skull that levitates in place, 3 ribs that stick out on both sides of his chest. He has hands resembling the gloves worn by the electronic music duo Daft Punk. He wears a black suit, the lapel resembling bat wings, and a white dress shirt with a magenta pink tie.

Personality[]

Lewis was described as a kind person in life. He was deeply in love with Vivi, and they enjoyed a strong romantic relationship. He was supportive and loyal to his friends, and an affectionate son and older brother to his family. He's intuitive and perceptive, with a sharp eye and a quick mind.

After his murder, Lewis' grief at Arthur's betrayal shattered him. His love for his best friend turned into a hatred and lust for revenge that engulfed all reason. But still, under it all, his heart belonged to Vivi. The brief moment of reconciliation between him and Arthur demonstrates a stunning ability to forgive.

Lewis loves adventure and romance novels, and is a big fan of Sailor Moon and Grim Fandango.

History[]

Lewis was formerly a member of the Mystery Skulls Paranormal Investigation team. On one fateful journey, the team entered an ominous-looking cave, choosing to split up to cover more ground. Vivi went one way, while Lewis, Arthur, and Mystery went another. However, Lewis only found an empty pit filled with stalagmites (where Vivi's explored path ended). As he tried to turn back, Arthur was possessed by a malicious spirit and pushed him off the cliff edge, impaling him on the stalagmites below.

Ghost[]

Months later, the team's van breaks down near a large mansion. (The purple lightning coursing through the dashboard as this happens indicates that it's Lewis' handiwork.) Once inside, the team is 'greeted' by Dead Beats, Attacked by a possessed suit of armor, and frightened by the Living Portraits, one of which triggers a trapdoor. While Vivi and Mystery somehow land in the kitchen, Arthur finds himself in a deep pit with a coffin and several unlit torches. The coffin opens to reveal Lewis in his ghost form, with a golden beating heart-shaped object over the left side of his chest. He points to Arthur ominously in sync with the lyric "It's you I hate the most", underscoring his vendetta against him as he begins the chase.

Just as Lewis has Arthur cornered, Vivi jumps in between the two. Lewis stops short, remembering his feelings for Vivi, though she appears not to recognize him, and tries to give her his heart. However, Arthur pulls her away at the last minute. They reach for each other, though in vain, and the heart falls to the ground, breaking and turning from its golden glow to an icy blue. Lewis explodes in a rage, but they escape the fireball, leaving him alone with his literal broken heart.

As the van drives off, Lewis opens the "heart" (revealed to be a locket) to reveal a photo of him and Vivi together. Resuming back to his human form, Lewis sheds a single tear and disappears. As the van drives off into the night, the mansion vanishes along with him.

Freaking Out[]

Sometime later, Shiromori's search for Mystery leads her to the former location of The Mansion. While she manages to find Mystery's essence and forms it into a floral tracking spell, she reawakens Lewis' dormant spirit in the process. He attacks her. Shiromori survives his assault and prepares for a confrontation, but ultimately seems to decide that tracking down Mystery is more important and escapes underground.

Lewis notices the discarded flowers Shiromori grew using Arthur and Vivi's essence. He lovingly picks Vivi's flower up and wrathfully crushes Arthur's underfoot, his vow of vengeance unyielding. He then uses a few petals from Vivi's flower to revitalize his shattered heart locket, dismisses his conjured coffee table and coffee cup, and sets off accompanied by a few Dead Beats. As he crosses the road, a truck runs him over, but Lewis uses the occasion to possess the entire truck, reshaping it in his image. The terrified driver, Rooster, barely escapes with his life, before slamming the gas pedal.

Hellbent[]

Lewis attempts to break down the van, glitching out the radio and causing it to play Hellbent as he chases them in his possessed truck. When Shiromori attacks Mystery he inadvertently knocks her off the van and runs her over, then pursues the van down the hill to Lance's mechanic workshop. He confronts Arthur and recalls his past life, his relationship with Vivi, and Arthur's jealousy over it that led to his death. He tosses Arthur into the back of his truck, which becomes a nightmarish echo of the Cavern where he died. His Dead Beats lead Arthur to the fateful cliff, and Lewis corners him. He grabs Arthur by the collar and dangles him over the edge. As he's about to drop him, though, his skull changes into his living appearance. Arthur finally realizes where his missing friend has been all along, right before he's dropped. As Lewis drops Arthur over the edge, he sees his friend's frightened, confused, grieving face and realizes he has made a terrible mistake. The instant regret shatters his heart once again.

The Future[]

As Lewis heard Arthur's voice, he looked at him in remorse as he saw himself in Arthur's place, falling towards his death. As Lewis began to dispel the illusion he had conjured, he was interrupted by Lance blasting him from behind with a shotgun, sending Lewis' cracked heart to the ground. The illusion collapses, and Lewis stalks toward Lance furiously. The mechanic frantically pumped blast after blast out of the shotgun, to no avail. The last we saw of Lance was Lewis looking down at him; not quite vengeful, but seriously annoyed. It is implied he only knocked out or disarmed Lance rather than harming him.

Recovering from his fall into a pile of boxes, Arthur noticed Lewis's heart locket on the floor and grabbed it. Arthur's touch sends a shudder through Lewis' soul, immediately alerting him to this intrusion. Looking inside the locket, Arthur saw a picture of Lewis and Vivi. As he peered even closer, the picture changed to group photo with Lewis with all his beloved friends. Lewis snatched the heart out of Arthur's hands, turning his back to hide his embarrassment. Looking into the locket himself, he was then surprised to see that the picture had changed, and that Arthur and Mystery were now a part of the picture as well. Seeing this, inky black tears began to form in his sockets before he dropped to his knees as Arthur looked at him, seeming taken aback. It is then that Lewis realizes he has more than one person worth protecting--and forgiving.

After an explosion caused by Shiromori toppled the truck, Lewis and Arthur somehow managed to emerge unscathed with Arthur's uncle in tow. As they came out and saw Shiromori's giant vines creeping towards them. Lewis then began to burn the vines with his pyrokinesis as Arthur ran off with his uncle to safety. When Mystery began transforming into Murder Mystery, Lewis clenched his head (either from the sudden noise or in pain) before opening his eyes and seeing Vivi in pain as he quickly rushed to her side to make sure that she was okay. Arthur soon joined the group as well as before all of them looked up in shock to see the horrifying beast, Murder Mystery towering above them.

Relationships[]

Vivi[]

Lewis and Vivi were part of the same paranormal investigator group while he was alive. Lewis is deeply in love with Vivi and is hellbent on reuniting with her and avenging himself against Arthur. She is so dear to his heart that the locket that symbolizes his heart and soul contains a romantic, intimate picture of the two of them happy together.

When Lewis perished at the bottom of the cavern, Vivi was a witness to his death. It is strongly implied that his dying wish was that she would forget him, and not be haunted by what she saw. Thus, Vivi does not quite remember who Lewis is--although, she is slowly regaining her memories.

Arthur[]

Before his death, Arthur and Lewis were both members of the Mystery Skulls, and were unbreakable ride-or-die best friends. But Arthur still felt some jealousy and resentment, feeling like a third wheel in Lewis and Vivi's love story.

After he was killed by a possessed Arthur, he came back from the dead and sought vengeance, unaware that it wasn't Arthur's fault. Arthur, for his part, had no memory of the event and had spent the proceeding months desperately trying to figure out what happened to him, and why Vivi couldn't remember him.

At the end of Hellbent, when Lewis finally corners Arthur and finally has the chance to exact his revenge, Arthur finally understands what happened to his one-time best friend. Seeing Arthur's face, stricken with grief and shock, was enough to pull Lewis back to his senses and realize what he had just done.

In the first few moments of The Future, we see a glimpse of Lewis' thoughts. In a moment of terrible regret, he sees himself in Arthur's place, breaking his heart, and driving him to shatter the illusion to save Arthur's life. All is not remedied, and Lewis still bears some harsh feelings toward Arthur, until he opens the locket and the image inside changes. This only confirms to Lewis that despite his hatred and hurt, he still deeply cares about Arthur, leaving him in tears.

Mystery[]

There is not much known about Lewis' and Mystery's relationship. Before his death, they were members of the same team and seemed to be friends.

Mr. & Mrs. Pepper[]

Mr. and Mrs. Pepper are Lewis's foster parents. One night, a young Lewis showed up on their doorstep, scuffed up and half-unconscious as a child. Despite numerous attempts to discover where he came from and what brought him there, Mr. & Mrs. Pepper were never able to unravel his past. With nowhere to go, they decided to take him in as one of the family.[1]

Lewis' sisters[]

Lewis has three younger sisters, however, unlike Lewis, they appear to be biologically related to Mr. and Mrs. Pepper rather than being adopted. In the following picture, the one on Lewis' shoulder is Paprika, the one in the front is Belle, and the one under the table is Cayenne.[2] Before his death, Lewis used to babysit his sisters.

Abilities[]

  • Levitation: Lewis shows that he can hover in the air at will.
  • Pyrokinesis: Lewis has the ability to produce and control fire, though it is unknown if his ability to manipulate fire also applies to already existing fire or only to his own. Flames produced by Lewis are an unnatural purple color, and he can shape them into various forms (like his hair). His control over this power ranges from very fine, small flames to massive explosions such as the one seen at the end of "Ghost".
    • Fire punch: Lewis can engulf his fist in flames to empower a physical strike.
    • Fireball: In "Hellbent," Lewis throws a fireball at the Mystery Van that instantly pops one of its tires.
  • Dormant Form: Lewis has the ability to retreat into his heart locket, allowing him to recover.
  • Super strength: In "Freaking Out," It is shown Lewis has this ability. When Shiromori accidentally revives Lewis, he retaliates with a punch so powerful it sends her head flying from her shoulders.
  • Object possession: As shown in "Freaking Out," Lewis is able to possess an object and change its general appearance to make it more suitable to himself. The object possessed also acquires ghostly properties similar to his, as shown when he drives Rooster's stolen truck through a tunnel too small to fit by transforming it into flames.
  • Electrokinesis: He can disable the electric drive of the objects that need it. He has disabled the Mystery Skulls van both in "Ghost," and "Hellbent", as well as Arthur's prosthetic arm.
  • Illusions: Lewis has the ability to create powerful spectral illusions and hallucinations, so powerful that they can actually be physically harmful. In "Ghost", he lures the Mystery Skulls into a trap using a tangible illusion of a massive mansion. In "Hellbent," he traps Arthur in a nightmarish recreation of the cavern in which he died.
    • Construct creation: Lewis is capable of making simple objects, like lampposts, tables, chairs, and coffee mugs. The Dead Beats also seem to be of Lewis' creation as well.
  • Nigh invulnerability: As a ghost, Lewis seems to be almost entirely immune to physical harm. However, attacks that hit the location where his heart would have been can stagger him. It is not known if Lewis is vulnerable to attack by magic or other supernatural beings.
  • Driving: Lewis is a skilled driver, capable of handling either a large van or an 18-wheeler with equal dexterity.

Weaknesses[]

  • Heart Locket: Lewis's heart houses his spirit, powers, and memories while acting as his tether. Lewis was able to feel pain from the heart being shot by Lance's gun, and in the area of the chest where the heart should be, implying the heart's placement is integral to Lewis's form. Damage to the heart locket has a negative effect on Lewis's mental state, ranging from unbridled fury (as seen in "Ghost" and "Freaking Out") to pain and despair (as seen in "The Future").
